William Tragen Kirkpatrick

Francis Asbury Kirkpatrick's first son died in a fire as an infant, so William Tragen Kirkpatrick was the eldest surviving son. He was born in Pike County, Illinois, 18 September 1842. William T. moved with his family to Iowa, his father being an itinerant Methodist minister.

At age 18, young William T. Kirkpatrick enlisted in the Union Army. The date was 24 May 1861, at Keokuk, Iowa. William was assigned to Company K, 2nd Regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry as a private. He was killed in action -- shot in the head and died instantly -- at the Battle of Fort Donelson, 15 February 1862. He was buried in the Eden Township Cemetery, Marshall County, Iowa. He was unmarried. His mother claimed a pension based on his service and based on the fact that he was the family's major support after his father's accidental disablement.
