Maria Matilda (sometimes referred to in the records as Matilda M.) was born 2 July 1835, Lee County, Iowa and died 21 July 1914. She married 4 December 1853, Henry County, Iowa, to James F. Miller, son of Alfred and Nancy (New) Miller, who was born 21 March 1833, Scott County, Illinois. James died 18 October 1902 in Henry County, Iowa.

James Miller farmed in Henry County, Iowa. He was elected Township Trustee of Baltimore Township several times and served for four years as Township Assessor. He was elected to these offices despite the fact that he was a Democrat in a heavily Republican territory. James and Matilda were members of the Protestant Methodist Church.

There were seven children born of the marriage.
