When James was about two (2) years old his parents and siblings migrated from Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina to Statesville, Wilson County, Tennessee.
On August 7, 1823 James married (1)Judith McDonnold. Judith was the daughter of John Ewing McDonnold and Eleanor (Hughes) McDonnold. To this union five children were born;

Judith McDonnold died April 17, 1844 in Alpine, Overton County, Tennessee. James married 2- Jane Sidney Ireland Simpson, The daughter of George Simpson and Mary Trigg. To this union six (6) children were born.

His last sermon was at the Old Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Sparta, White County,Tennessee.
