Graveside services for Lou Ellen Barton-Tapia, 79, will be held in the Portales Cemetery on Monday at 11 a.m. Her son-in-law Dennis Harper will officiate, assisted by Jonathan Wolkwitz and Ray Lauterbach. Mrs. Tapia died Friday, March 13, in Plains Regional Medical Center-Portales Nursing Home. Services are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales, Inc.

She was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Prescott, Ariz., daughter of Beryl and Guy Baker. In 1935, she married Ed Kirkpatrick and they had a son and a daughter. In 1942 she married Ben R. Barton and moved to Brownsville, Texas where she practiced nursing. She later moved to Walla Walla, Wash., and in 1967 married Henry Tapia who preceded her in death. Mrs. Tapia retired to Portales in 1972 to be near her daughter and family. She was a member of the local Seventh-day Adventist Church. Survivors include her son, Edward Barton of Brownsville; a daughter, Patricia Harper of Portales; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers will be all family friends.
