Charles C Knagenhelm

(7 Apr 1914 - 22 Nov 2006)

Easy Reader, Hermosa Beach, California, Thursday, March 22, 2007: Long-time Hermosa Beach resident Charles Casler Knagenhelm passed away in the arms of his wife Eunice on Nov. 22. He was 92. Knagenhelm was born on April 7, 1914, the only son to Charles and Myrna Babcock Knagenhelm, at their home on Grammercy Place, Los Angeles. His father emigrated from Norway in 1885 and purchased and developed properties in Lancaster, Kings Canyon and 500 acres in Malibu Canyon. One of his famous developments was Crater Camp in Malibu Canyon, which was the only family vacation campground in Los Angeles County during the early 20th century. Knagenhelm spent his childhood working at his father's side on the Malibu property during summers and vacations. He married Mary Ella Leeds in 1937 and had two sons, Gary and John Knagenhelm, while living in the San Fernando Valley. Mary Ella passed away in 1954. He then met and married Viola Hansen Atsinger in 1955. The couple moved to Hermosa Beach, where, after many years, Viola passed away. He then married Eunice Demmelmaier, a long time family friend. Charlie enjoyed a 40-year sales career at the Potter Roemer Company in Los Angeles, a manufacturer of fire protection equipment. He retired in 1983 at age 71. During his last few years, his health issues kept him close to home where he could be seen daily in his garden, tending to his tomatoes, vegetables, flowers and roses. His favorite things in life were his family and friends. Knagenhelm is survived by his wife, Eunice, of 24 years. The family will hold a memorial on Charlie's birthday, April 7, at Malibu Canyon to celebrate Charlie's life.
