James W. Kirkpatrick

(1842 - 1864)

James W. (or M.) was a member of Shelby's Brigade of Calvary, CSA, and was killed in action in Missouri. Confederate General Sterling Price made a last sweep in Missouri in 1864 and it was during this raid James W. Kirkpatrick dropped out to visit his home. He was shot while endeavoring to rejoin his command. Request for burial at home, made by his mother, was declined by the Union military authorities, causing much bitterness in the family.
