Posted at findagrave.com: Samuel Kirkpatrick was 20, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. L of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Dec 4, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Dec 24, 1861. Kirkpatrick transferred from Co. L to Co. M on Jan 1, 1862. He became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on Dec 11, 1863, and later mustered out of the service on Aug 8, 1865, in Atlanta. His parents were James Oliver Kirkpatrick (1815-1885) and Malinda Westfall (1819-1847). He married Lovica Jane Allsup on Sept 23, 1870, in Henry Co., Iowa. They had two children: Stella, born 1872, and Samuel H., born 1873. His wife applied for her widow's pension on June 16, 1880. Her application is #268,487, and minor child's #268,488.
