Denver Post, Denver, Colorado, Friday, April 24, 1908, Page 12: Death Comes to Pioneer Woman. Mrs. Jane B. Stillman Crossed Western Plains Fifty Years Ago. In the death of Mrs. Jane B. Stillman yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. S. Clason, 1027 Steele street, a notable woman passed away. Mrs. Stillman was among the pioneer homesteaders in the Mississippi valley. She was a daughter of Maj. William Burt of Longmeadow, Mass., and the wife of Samuel Allyn Stillman, who died in Denver in 1903. Over fifty years ago Mr. Stillman and his wife, with four small children, drove in a sled from Massachusetts to Garnavilla, Iowa, where they settled in a homestead. This trip was made in the middle of a bitter winter, when the snow was so deep that they drove over the fences of the settlers passed on the way. Mrs. Stillman was 81 years old and the mother of eleven children, of whom four daughters survive her, Miss Gene H. Stillman, Mrs. Mable L. Clason and Mrs. Liska Stillman Churchill of Denver and Mrs. Cora Springer of Deadwood, S. D. She also leaves thirteen grand children and seven great grand children. Death was caused by bronchial pneumonia. During the fifteen years of her residence in Denver she had made many warm friends.
