Obituary posted at Raymond Funeral Service: Melvin “Ray” Short, 78, of La Plata, MD died on December 16, 2014 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, MD. Ray was a Telecommunications Manager with the Dept. of the Navy (U.S. Government) and was a Veteran of the United States Navy. He was a charter member of the Southern MD Wood Carver’s Association as well as Vice President. He was also a charter member of the Carousel Group. He was honorably discharged as Senior Chief Radioman after 20 years. He served aboard the USS Ashtabula during the North Korean War. He also served during the Vietnam War. He was a loving father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed. He is the son of the late John Henry Short and the late Minnie Ellen Wines Short. He was also predeceased by 11 of his siblings. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Short; his sons, Michael Ray Short and Jeffrey Allen Short; his daughter, Caryl Ellen Ruckert, and his sister, Edith Jean Asbury. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Burial Service and Interment will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 1:45 PM at the MD Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20623.
