Posted at the U.S. Gen Web site for Jasper Co., Iowa: Lynnville Star - Richard Mathews who has been seriously ill for some time, passed away at his home northwest of town, on Monday, May 22. He was one of the oldest residents of Jasper county, having been born here in 1848 and has always lived near the same place. He enjoyed a very extensive acquaintance all over the county and numbered his friends by the hundred. His health has been gradually failing for many months and during the entire winter he has been confined to his home. The rites were conducted on Tuesday at the home and Rev. Hanson had charge of the services after which the I.O.O.F. lodge, of which he was a member, closed the last chapter of a long life. An immense concourse of friends were in attendance, of whom the family have the sincere sympathy. Jonathan Richard Mathews was born, January 20, 1848, in Jasper county, died May 22, aged 63 years, 4 months and 2 days. He was married February 22, 1877, to Tilla Mendenhall, who died August 1878. The funeral was held Tuesday at 2 o’clock at the home of his son. The services were conducted by A. J. Hanson after which the order of which he was a member took charge. Interment in the Swan cemetery.
