Kalona News, Kalona, Iowa, March 6, 2008: Barbara E. Shalla, 67, of Riverside died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a three-month battle with cancer. Services were held Saturday, March 1, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Rev. Julie Poulsen officiating. Interment was in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. She was born July 10, 1940 in Washington, the daughter of William "WJ" and Elizabeth (Rees) Shannon. She graduated from Washington High School in 1958 and later graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Drake University in 1962. On June 2, 1962 she was united in marriage to Larry Shalla in Washington. She was a life resident of Washington. In 1980 she started working at Washington Title and Guarantee, which later became Day and Bordwell Abstracts. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Chapter J PEO and was an active member of the Washington County Porkettes of which she was a founding member. Barb was a 4-H leader and served on the Washington Public Library Board. She is survived by her husband Larry Shalla of Riverside; three daughters, Laurie Shalla of Redondo Beach, California, Beth and husband Steve Stuck of Des Moines, and Pam and husband Don Newman of Washington; two granddaughters, Meghan and Sarah Newman of Washington; and her mother-in-law Olive Shalla of Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law Dwane Shalla. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Washington County or the Washington Public Library.
