Milford Mail, Milford, Iowa, Thursday, February 6, 1930, Page 1, Col. 3: Milford's Last Civil War Veteran Dies At Soldiers' Home. Geo. Griffith to Be Buried Here Friday Morning at 10:00 o'clock. George Griffith, the last old soldier of the Milford post, died at the Old Soldier's home in Marshalltown, Wednesday morning after a short illness. He contracted the flu and due to his advanced years, he was taken shortly after contracting the illness. George Griffith was born August 25, 1844* in New York state. He enlisted at the age of 17 but like many of the young men of that time, swore his age to be 21. He served for a short time and was wounded. He was not able to serve again as his wounds were rather severe. Mr. Griffith was the last old soldier of this post. He was for many years color bearer and his son, J. F. Griffith, has the colors he carried. His body will be brought here today from Marshalltown where he has been for the past three years. Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church, Friday morning. He will have a military funeral. All members of the American Legion Auxiliary are requested to attend the funeral services of Mr. Griffith, to be held in the Methodist church, Friday morning at 10:30.
