Madison, Wisconsin: Helen M. Billings, age 104, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, after a long and wonderful life. She was born on Sept. 21, 1900, in Fennimore, Wis., the daughter of Tilton and Leona Smith. She attended Normal School at Carroll College for two years and taught in a one room schoolhouse in the Fennimore area. Helen married Guerdon Billings on Aug. 14, 1923. She and her husband farmed in the Southwest Wisconsin area until moving to Madison, in 1943. Helen worked at Oscar Mayer, Rayovac, and UW-Madison, as a desk attendant for the residence halls, retiring in 1973. She belonged to the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed reading, especially murder mysteries, and collected blue glassware. Helen loved to work on crossword puzzles, "in ink," well into her early 100s. She is survived by her children, Virginia Falkenstein of Madison, Barbara Conrard of Madison, Lee Billings of Sun Prairie, and Mary Billings of Madison; 12 grandchildren, Michael (Louise) Billings of Stockton, Calif., Cynthia Steinle of Madison, Kristine (Clark) Heinzelman of Marshall, Vicki (Larry) Anderson of Muscoda, Greg Billings (Kathy, special friend) of Orfordville, David (Ina) Falkenstein of Florida, Steven (Paulette) Falkenstein of McFarland, Quentin Falkenstein (Denise Okey, special friend) of Madison, Helen (Scott) Felland of Oconomowoc, Sharon Carroll of Madison, Kevin Billings (Julie Wiske, special friend) of Sun Prairie, and Stacy (Jim Mautz) Billings of Madison; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Jean of Maryland; three nephews; and a niece. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, two sons, Keith (Inez) and Douglas (Mary) Billings; a great-grandson, Matthew Falkenstein; two sons-in-law, Edward Falkenstein and Charles Conrard; three brothers; two sisters; and a nephew. A memorial service will be held at Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
