Janiece Helen Taylor

East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, Monday, May 19, 2003: Pendleton -- A graveside service for Janiece Helen Taylor Stanhope will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pilot Rock Cemetery. Mrs. Stanhope, 78, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Amber's Loving Care in Pendleton. The next to youngest of eight children, she was born April 23, 1925, at the family home along the Minam River, to Joseph Harvey and Gleana Geneva Merritt Taylor. The family moved to Elgin after her birth, then to Milton-Freewater where she attended school, graduating from Mac-Hi in 1943. On Oct. 17, 1943, she married Richard Vernon Stanhope at her parent's home in Milton-Freewater. The couple moved to Pilot Rock after their wedding and moved to a home on McKay Creek in 1954. Mrs. Stanhope was employed at the Pilot Rock lumber mill until the couple started their family. She then became a homemaker and mother until 1966 when she went to work at Pendleton Woolen Mills and later the Pendleton Post Office. In 1968 she began a career as a commercial printer for the East Oregonian and later Master Printers where she retired in 1998. She was involved in Eastern Star for 50 years and went through the chairs many times, holding various offices. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known as Mom or Grandma to most everyone who knew her. Survivors include her son, Stanley, of Pendleton; daughters, Donna Hinkle of Pendleton and Bonnie Hopkins of Milton-Freewater; sisters, Mattie Davis of Enterprise and Vivian Anderson of Milton-Freewater; grandchildren, April Jordan, Richard Casey, Vernon Hyke, Jesse Hyke, Kyra Stanhope and Tyson Stanhope; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, in December 2001; by sons, Richard Allen Stanhope and Roger Dale Stanhope; by her parents; by brothers, Wiley Taylor and Clarence Taylor, and by sisters, Edna Rolph, Geneva Marks and Anna Marie Taylor.
