Obituary from the Bay City Tribune, Matagorda Co., Texas, July 29, 2004: James Owen Cox, 63, of Selkirk Island passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004 after a long battle with cancer. He was born September 12, 1940 in Kenedy, Texas to George Owen and Melba Yeater Cox. He was a hair stylist and, in later years, a rancher with a special love for animals. He is survived by: wife, Jane Matthes Cox; daughter, Tonya DeHart (Michael) of Franklin, Indiana; step-daughter, Karen Capak of Bay City; step-sons Kurt Smith of Bay City and Todd Smith of San Patricio; sisters, Dorothy Sykes (Jim) of Rockport and Sharon Morgan (Tom) of Weatherford; eleven grandchildren and special friend, David Hight of Selkirk Island. A memorial service will be held at his Selkirk home on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 10 a.m. Lunch to follow at Selkirk Fire Department.
