Glen Gerald Gibbons Sr.

East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, Saturday, October 1, 2011: MILTON-FREEWATER - Glen G. Gibbons Sr., 89, of Milton-Freewater died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater. Concluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Friends who wish to pay their respects may call at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Sunday, Oct. 2 from 1-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Mr. Gibbons, was born Aug. 24, 1922, at his family's home in the Blue Mountain foothills area east of Milton. His parents, Phillip Sheridan Gibbons Sr. and Mary Nancy (Schaeffer) Gibbons, settled in the Walla Walla Valley in 1908. He was the longtime general manager of Blue Mountain Growers, Inc., a farmer-owned cooperative based in Milton-Freewater, from 1954 to 2000. In the course of his long career he received numerous honors for service to the community and the agricultural industry, including the Distinguished Service Award for Individual Contribution to Agriculture from the Oregon Department of Agriculture in 2003. The Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce, where he served as president in 1961, named him Agriculturalist of the Year in 1984 and Man of the Year in 1985. Over the years he served on a variety of agriculture-related state and regional organizations. He also worked with the Northwest Fruit Exporters Association. Mr. Gibbons is survived by his wife of 69 years, Fran (Elsie Louise) Stanhope Gibbons; daughter Karen E. Bennett of Yachats; son Glen G. Gibbons Jr. of Eugene; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Mary Belle, Phil Jr., Effie Sylvia, Helen Fay and Wilbur Lawrence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Aid Center or the M-F Junior Show through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
