Posted at findagrave.com: Veteran Worker With Stock Dies. Graveside services for Merritt S. Ferguson, 78, father of David D. Ferguson of Nevada City and one year resident of Grass Valley, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens under Hooper Weaver auspices. He was a native of Iowa, born Oct. 2, 1880. A jockey during his youth he spent most of his life training and breaking horses. He traveled the world over working at various jobs but primarily with stock. The past few years he has worked summers on a ranch in Modoc County. Retiring three years ago he settled in Grass Valley last year. His passing was sudden despite his advanced age. He died 1:45 p.m. yesterday at his home 632 LeDuc Street. Bereaved besides his son is his daughter, Arietta (Arletta) Drybread of Cottonwood, Shasta County. He was the uncle of Casey Tibbs, well known national rodeo bronc rider.
