Virgil Arthur Buchanan

Buchanan, 72, of rural Carrollton was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 1989 at his residence, following a lengthy illness. He was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Rombauer, Mo., a son of the late Henry G. and Maudie G. Hamm Buchanan. He married the former Minnie Ruyle, and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Martin (Lanita) Combs of Carrollton; a son, Donald Buchanan of Carrollton; five grandchildren; one step granddaughter; three brothers, Lennie Buchanan of Branson, Mo., Grover Buchanan of Madison and John Buchanan of Alton; and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur (Beulah) Henderson of Alton and Mrs. Edward (Elsie) Herbstrait of Alton. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Mr. Buchanan served in the armed forces in World War II and was employed at the old Alton Boxboard Company, now Jefferson-Smurfitt, until his retirement. His body has been donated to the Washington University School of Medicine in St.Louis. A memorial service was held Dec. 29 at Berdan Baptist Church in Berdan. Memorials may be to the Children's Transplant Fund or the Patient Care Fund of Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.
