A native of Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Edward and Eleanor Austin Panell. She attended the University of South Carolina. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and former officer of the Women of the Church; former Sunday school leader and Church Circle officer. She had been a volunteer and member of Mary Black Hospital Auxiliary since 1974 and member of the Auxiliary Board of Directors. She was a member of Elizabeth Heath Study Club and former member and President of Gay Blades Garden Club. She was first married to the late Harold Dean "Pete" Page. Survivors include: her husband, John Bennette Cornwell, Jr., of the home; sons: Edward Ervin Page of Spartanburg, Harold Dean "Pete" Page, Jr. of Isle of Palms, SC; step-sons, John Bennette Cornwell, Jr. [III], of Greenville, SC, Michael Harby Cornwell of Greensboro, NC; step-daughter, Pamela Jeanne Bartenfield of Seabrook Island, SC; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 3:30 PM, Saturday, December 5, 1998, at First Presbyterian Church and conducted by Dr. Todd B. Jones, and Dr. George L. McGill. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Parker Champion, Bruce White, Pete Petree, Dr. Jack Keith, Dick Hutcheson, and Wally Barre. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mary Black Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 3217, Spartanburg, SC 29304 or the Purnell Fund, % First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. The family is at the home. Floyd's North Church St. Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
