Jacob R. Kern

On the 1880 U. S. Census of Clayton, Adams Co., Illinois, Jacob R. Kern appears with his wife Sarah E. Jacob is the township constable.
Posted at findagrave.com: After a lingering illness, lasting many months, Mr. Jacob R. Kern passed to his final reward at his home at seven o'clock, Wednesday evening, October 4, 1905. He has been failing four or five years, but not until within a year or so did he retire from active business life. For several years he was a constable and later followed the business of mercantile collecting. He came with his wife to Clayton thirty-seven years ago and the place where he died in the north west part of town was their home during all those years. He was a man of positive nature but within his big anatomy was a heart which could easily be touched by the sorrows of others. Jacob R. Kern was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Kern, born in Monongehelia county, West Virginia, March 15, 1828, hence was more than seventy seven years of age. He came to Quincy in 1840 and on December 24, 1850, was united in marriage with Sarah E. Kirkpatrick who survives him. They had no living children. Mr. Kern united with the M. E. church when twelve years of age and the Rev. C. M. Monson pastor of Clayton church conducted the funeral service at his home on Saturday afternoon, after which the tired old body was laid to rest in South Side Cemetery. Mr. Kern gave the pastor abundant evidence of his faith in the son of God. The widow has the sympathy of the people. She is left along in the evening of life but not alone for beneath and supporting her are the Everlasting arms. She will continue to live in the little home and relatives will look after her welfare.
