The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday, July 17, 1996, Page C 4: The funeral for Harold Wayne Garrard of Fairburn, a retired Delta Air Lines pre-flight inspector, was Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Fairburn, with burial at Holly Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Garrard, 74, died Saturday of a sudden illness at South Fulton Hospital. While working at Delta, Mr. Garrard "inspected the mechanics' work at the jet base in Hartsfield," said his son-in-law, George Latzanich. Mr. Garrard had a lifelong interest in aviation. During World War II, he was a quartermaster in the Army Air Corps. While stationed in England, Mr. Garrard helped support the bombing raids on Germany. "He lost a lot of friends over there," his son-in-law said. A native of Atlanta, Mr. Garrard was a graduate of Atlanta's Technical High School and attended Georgia State University. For 25 years, Mr. Garrard was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fairburn, where he served as a deacon. Having learned to play the piano as a youngster, Mr. Garrard was an interim organist at several local churches. "He taught my wife, LuAnn, to play as well," said his son-in-law. Mr. Garrard's daughter is a professional musician and teaches at Clayton State College. A member of the Friendship Force to the former Soviet republic of Georgia, Mr. Garrard enjoyed traveling. From his trips to Europe and the Far East, Mr. Garrard found the countryside of Ireland the most memorable. Surviving are his wife, Anne Garrard; his daughter, LuAnn Latzanich of Avondale Estates; a sister, Connie Whiteaker of Atlanta; and two grandchildren.
