James Jeremiah White

Seward Independent, Seward, Nebraska, Wednesday, August 8, 1984, Page 17, Cols. 1 & 2: James Jeremiah White, 93, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Aug. 1. He was born Sept. 29, 1890 near Ulysses to Charles and Elvina Burge White. He attended School District 87. He married Julia Howe of Surprise at Seward on Sept. 4, 1912. He farmed in the Ulysses area for more than 75 years, continuing to live on the farm after his retirement. He pioneered in irrigation from the Blue River in the 1930s and introduced hybrid corn to the area. He was a 4-H leader and school board member and was honored by the Omaha Stockyards in 1970 as a 50-year pioneer shipper. He was baptized at his home in 1982.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two step-mothers, two sisters, Mabel Wynegar and Clara Pollock, and his son Howard. Survivors include his wife Julia of St. Joseph's Villa; two sons, Burton and Morris, both of Ulysses; one daughter, Grace (Mrs. Loran) Hoeft, Ulysses; a daughter-in-law, Gladys (Mrs. Howard) White, O'Neill; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, Aug. 3, at the Ulysses United Methodist Church with burial in the Ulysses Township Cemetery. Pallbearers were Art, Glenn and Donald White, Ronald Hoeft, Steve Wynegar and Marvin Pollock.
