Ezekail Candler Gathings, born 10 November 1903; Law Degree from the University of Arkansas; elected Representative from 1st Congressional District of Arkansas in 1938, re-elected continuously.

"Took" Gathings, 75, of West Memphis died thing morning, after collapsing during a meeting of the West Memphis Port Authority.

Gathings was making a presentation to the authority at a West Memphis motel when he collapsed. He was treated at the scene by several emergency medical technicians and was transported to a West Memphis hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Dr. Chester W. Peeples Jr., Gathings' physician said Gathings suffered a heart attack.
Gathings, a member of the authority, was standing at his chair and speaking to the group when he fell backward onto the floor. Peeples said Gathings had no vital signs when he arrived at the hospital at 9:30 a.m. about five minutes after he had collapsed. His vital signs were briefly restored but failed again and Gathings died at 10:07 a.m.

Gathings was born in Mississippi and attended high school in Earle on the western edge of Crittenden County. He studied at the University of Alabama and obtained his law degree at the University of Arkansas in 1929.

Gathings became a state senator in 1934 and was first elected to Congress in 1938. He retired in 1968. He had practiced law in Crittenden County since his retirement from Congress, and served on several city and county committees and advisory boards.
