On the 1940 U. S. Census of Bernalillo, Sandoval Co., New Mexico, George L Stanhope appears with his wife Lucille and daughters Carmen and Georgie Lee. George is a brakeman for a freight train. In the 1935 they were living in rural Cloudcroft, Otero Co., New Mexico.

Alamogordo News, Alamogordo, New Mexico, Thursday, August 7, 1941, Front Page, Col. 1: Sleeping Sickness Claims Mike Stanhope. The death of George LeRoy (Mike) Stanhope, 35, occurred at his home on the corner of Florida and 8th St., Tuesday of an illness of about one week. Death is ascribed by the three physicians who attended him to encephalitis lethargica or sleeping sickness. The disease is believed to be carried by a mosquito but is not necessarily fatal. Physicians say there is no serum as yet. Mr. Stanhope was fireman for the M. B. Prestridge Co. mill here and worked until August 2, although he was ill during the last week he worked and was not rational even when he left his work for the last time. He was born in Sioux City, Ia., and lived in various places until coming to the Sacramento Mountains about six years ago. Leaving Wills Canyon, he went to Bernalilo to enter sawmill work, where he remained until coming here at the opening of the Prestridge mill. He is survived by his widow and two children, Carmen, 12, and Georgia Lee 8. His mother, Mrs. Reuben Stanhope of Texhoma, Okla., arrived here Tuesday. His father was unable to come. Also arriving to be at the bedside of their brother were Mrs. Jean Curtis and Billy Stanhope of Texhoma and Delbert and Johnny Stanhope of Artesia. Other sisters unable to be here are Mrs. Ralph Evans, Texhoma and Mrs. G. J. Bell of Bangs, Tex. Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Gereb & Leadinghous Mortuary with Rev. Earl R. Keating conducting the services. Interment was made locally.
