Leslie Alvin Herbert

On the 1930 U. S. Census of School Dist. 119, Richland Co., Montana, Leslie A. Herbert appears with his wife Lulu and her children Ervin, Pearl and Dorothy. Their children together are Kenneth, Fern, Ruth and Hazel. Leslie is a veteran of World War I and is a farmer of stock and grain.
From the book Courage Enough I: Leslie and Lulu Herbert. Leslie homesteaded at the west end of Richland County, close to the Otis Waters farm in 1912. He entered the armed forces in 1918. Upon his discharge in 1919 he returned to Sidney and worked for Mr. Vaux for a short while. He then went to Richey, Montana and worked on the Henry Olsen farm and also for Fred Moore. On April 22, 1927 he married Lulu Connelley. The next summer he rented the Crabtree farm and farmed it for the next seven years. In 1931 he moved his family to the List creek School Section. Leslie and Lulu had five children, two boys and three girls. The eldest son, Kenneth died in 1934. They moved back to Sidney in 1937. Leslie died May 19, 1957 and was buried in the Sidney Cemetery with full military honors.
Funeral Services for Leslie Alvin Herbert, 65, retired Sidney farmer and blacksmith, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Sidney Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. John Chambers officiating. Burial will be in Sidney Cemetery with the Cloyd-Gerder Mortuary in charge. He died Sunday at his home in Sidney of a heart attack. He was born Feb. 4, 1892, in Custer, S.D., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Herbert. He came with his parents to Montana in 1903., living at Ekalka and Plentywood. Mr. Herbert went with his parents to a homestead near Sidney in 1898. He was a member of the U. S. Army during World War I. Mr. Herbert homesteaded near Richey upon his release from the Armed Forces. In 1923 Mr. Herbert married Lula Connelly in Sidney. In 1937 the couple moved into Sidney. Survivors include his wife, three daughters Miss Fern Herbert of Sidney, Mrs. John Thorland and Miss Hazel Herbert of Seattle, Wash.; two step daughters, Mrs. Pearl Johnson and Mrs. Dorothy York of Fresno, Calif; a son Max Herbert of Sidney and a step son Kevin Connelly of Fresno; two brothers, William of Spanaway, Wash., and Milo of Missoula; three sisters, Miss Evelyn Herbert of Billings, Mrs. Theodore Palmer of Clinton and Mrs. Gertrude Torkelson of Roseburg, Ore.; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
