Individual Details

William Scanland

(9 Mar 1778 - 28 May 1850)

William Scantland was born 9 March 1778 in Virgina, probably Stafford County. he died 28 May 1850 in Jackson County, Tennessee, to Rachel Rogers, daughter of Clayton Rogers*. In 1811 William and Rachel were living on the Cumberland River near the mouth of Sugar Creek in Jackson County. In 1816, William was named one of ten commissioners to lay out the couty seat of Jackson County. We are aware of two land transactions involving William Scanland. On 7 July 1819 he purchased from John C. McLemore, twenty acres in Jackson County on the south side of Doe Creek. On 12 November 1819 he purchased and additional twenty-five acres from Benjamin Roberts. This land was also in Jackson County, near Bullard Creek.

After William's death, Rachel moved to Cooke County, Texas, to live with her son. Cooke County is where she died.

There were four (4) children born of the marriage.

*A Clayton Rogers was executor of Francis Kirkpatrick's will in South Carolina. According to some sources, Francis's second wife was the widow of a Rogers. There seems to be another (albeit murky) relationship here.
