Guss Dunn Farmer

(27 Feb 1916 - 8 Jun 2011)

Posted at findagrave.com: Dr. Farmer passed peacefully from this life to heaven on June 8, 2011, surrounded by family and caregivers. He was born to Reese and Fannie Lee Farmer on February 27, 1916 in Dawson, Texas. He grew up there and attended Tarleton College and Graduated from Abilene Christian College. He received his Master's degree from So. Methodist University and completed an additional sixty hours of graduate level courses. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Southwestern Christian College. He preached for numerous Churches of Christ in Texas. He was a staff member of Southwestern for fifty-six years serving as head of the Bible department, teaching Bible and Greek. As a good teacher multiplies himself, Dr. Farmer taught hundreds of ministerial and other students who are scattered all over the world, filling pulpits and teaching others of Christ. With his academic qualifications he could have gone to many other Christian colleges and taught, but chose to stay at Southwestern to prepare many others to serve God there. In 2008 Guss and Janie were honored by SwCC as the Man and Woman of Valor at their yearly lectureship. Also, Dr. Farmer was honored by the Abilene Christian University College of Biblical Studies with the "Unsung Heroes Preacher Tribute Award" in 2004 for his work with black ministers and Churches of Christ. His influence will be felt throughout Christendom from now on.

He is survived by his devoted wife of over seventy years, Janie Farmer; a son Glynn Farmer and wife Jeanne and grand-daughter, Samantha of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a daughter, Annabel and husband Roger and grandchildren Corey Glass of Coppell and Lindsay Glass Campbell and her husband, Bob of Raleigh, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by a son, Guss Dunn Farmer, Jr. Also, he is survived and remembered by loving caregivers, especially Shaleda Buchanan, who loved and served him and Janie tirelessly, as well as a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

Donations in his honor can be made to Southwestern Christian College and/or Arms of Hope. Visitation will be from 6-8PM on Friday June 10, 2011, at Grove Hill Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at the White Rock Church of Christ, on Saturday June 11, with interment to follow at Grove Hill Memorial Park.
