Robert Hanna Moore Jr.

(28 Aug 1924 - 24 Jul 2007)

Posted at Find-A-Grave.com: Mr. Moore was born to the late Robert H. and Margaret Bratton Moore in a house that still stands on East Liberty Street in downtown York. A 1941 York High School graduate, he joined the United States Army in 1943 and made a 22-year career of it, retiring in 1965 as a Major. During that time he participated in the Luzon invasion in the Philippines during World War II and the U.S. occupation of Japan and Korea. His final assignment was at Fort Campbell, Ky., with the 101st Airborne Division. Along the way, Moore found time to earn a bachelor's degree from The Citadel (1959) and a master's degree in business administration from Winthrop University (1975). Always one to multi-task his talents, Moore, in the 1980's, taught business courses to sailors on board of U.S. Naval carriers stationed in the Middle East. He was as much a politician and community servant as he was a military man. He served as York's city manager three times from 1965 to 67,1976 to1980 and briefly as interim manager in 1985. In between, he was a York city council member from 1967 to 68, mayor from 1968 to 70 and ran unsuccessfully in the 1974 Fifth District Congressional race. He also was the city's codes administrator in 1976. Mr. Moore was the widower of Lois Ashe Moore. He died at home after complications from Parkinson's disease at age 82.
