Mary McCallum

(17 Feb 1924 - 23 Oct 2012)

From Legacy.com: Mary McCallum Wiles entered eternal rest Tuesday, October 23 at her home here in Dallas. She passed into eternity in peace surrounded by her children whom she loved more than life itself. Mary McCallum was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1924 to her parents Robena McDougall McCallum and The Rev. Arlington McCallum. Mary grew up in Washington, D.C. where her father served as rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, known as St. Paul’s K Street. Mary graduated from Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia with a major in chemistry. After graduating she worked as a cartographer for the U.S. War Services Department in Washington, D.C. Mary met her husband Charles Preston Wiles while he was a seminarian at her father’s parish. Preston and Mary were married by Father McCallum at St. Paul’s on the 29th of December, 1951. The Rev. Dr. C. Preston and Mrs. Mary Wiles subsequently moved to Burlington, New Jersey where he was Rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Parish. Mary devoted her life to raising her three children Mary, Pres Jr. and Wade. The family later moved to Dallas in 1964 when Pres Sr. answered the call to become Dean of St Mathew’s Episcopal Cathedral. After her children were grown, Mary served joyfully as the manager of the Cathedral Book Shop for many years until her retirement. She was a faithful member of the Altar Guild at St Mary’s and St Matthew’s for many years. Mary was a highly trained and gifted vocalist who sang for many years as soloist in her many churches’ choirs, as well as in amateur operetta and musicals. She was a passionate lover of dogs and her love for her children was rivalled perhaps only by her devotion to her terrier Tip-Tip and, later, the family German Shepherd, Tricky. Her life was marked by a singular commitment for self-betterment and sacrifice of self for the welfare of others. She will be much missed by her children and grandchildren who dearly loved her.

Mrs. Mary McCallum Wiles is survived by her daughter, Mary Margaret Wiles, Ph.D, of Christchurch, New Zealand; her sons, Preston Wiles, Jr. and Wade Burgess Wiles of Dallas, Texas; and her five grandchildren, Michael Andrew Wiles of Branford, Connecticut, Anne Elizabeth Wiles, lately of St. Andrew’s, Scotland, David Michael Wiles of San Antonio, Texas; and Lillian Emma Grace Wiles, Benjamin Nathaniel Burgess Wiles.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Bishop Board Music Fund, St. Paul's Parish, Washington, D.C. Funeral Services will be held Saturday October 27, 2012 at St. Lukes Episcopal Church, Dallas, TX 75230 at 11:00 a.m.
