John Robert Kirkpatrick was born 16 August 1926. On 26 October 1954 he married Janette (Smith) Worthy of Great Falls, Chester County, South Carolina. Janette Worthy had a daughter named Brenda Ann Worthy by her first marriage. Brenda was born 10 March 1947. She married on 23 November 1967 to Paul Venerable. She had two children, Melissa Anne Venerable, born 31 October 1968, and Allison Leigh Venerable, born 8 January 1971.

The State, Columbia, South Carolina, August 31, 2004: Rockingham, N.C.-- John R. Kirkpatrick, 78, died Friday, August 27, 2004 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born August 16, 1926 in Birmingham, Alabama a son of the late Joe G. Kirkpatrick, Sr. and Isabelle Crawford Kirkpatrick. Mr. Kirkpatrick graduated from Ft. Lawn High School and attended Gardner Webb College and Clemson University. He served in US Navy as an electrician on board minesweeper during WWII aboard the USS Rolette and in the Korean Conflict aboard USS Pelican and USS Courser. He was a former employee for Sandhurst Mills and Clark Equipment. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Walker Bible Class and was a former deacon. He was active over 50 years in Boy Scouts of America. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow and earned the Woodbadge. He was instrumental in organizing new troops and was awarded District Award of Merit and Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. He was a former Scoutmaster. He was locally involved with Troops 64, 148, 250 and 49 and also participated in troops in Alaska, MD, NM, NC, SC and TN. He was a volunteer at the Soup Kitchen and Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a life-long blood donor for American Red Cross, giving over 16 gallons of blood. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe G. Kirkpatrick, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dwight Williams and Rev. Scott Poole officiating. Surviving: his wife, Jeanette (Jan) Smith Kirkpatrick of Rockingham; his children, Brenda and Paul Venable of Johns Island, SC, Lynne and Gary Mauss of Albuquerque, NM and Lisa and Chuck Swan of Port Tobacco, MD; grandchildren, Melissa Venable of Tampa, Fla., Allison Venable of Johns Island, SC, Bryan Mauss and Erin Mauss of Albuquerque, NM and Madison Swan and Park Swan of Port Tobacco, MD. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Tuesday evening at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 904 Fayetteville Road, Rockingham, NC 28379. Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham is serving the Kirkpatrick family.
