On the 1920 U. S. Census of Bradford, Chickasaw Co., Iowa, Helen Whitten is head of household with her brother Will H. Coler living with her. Helen is 72, a widow and has no occupation listed. Will is 70, a widower and works as an agent of call books.
Obituary of Mrs. Helen Parish Whitten, from The Nashua Reporter, May 23, 1928. The funeral of Mrs. Helen parish-Whitten, 81, who died Sunday night, May 20, at New Hampton was held Wednesday, May 23, at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church. Rev. Creed, Episcopal rector of Waterloo, officiating. the body was laid to rest in Oak Hill. Helen Coler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Coler, was born in New York, afterwards coming west with her parents and settling in Iowa. She was for many years a highly respected citizen of Nashua, where her first husband J. P. Parish, conducted a furniture store. In later years after the death of Mr. Parish was was married to Rev. W. V. Whitten of the Episcopal church, Charles City, and went to that place to make her home. When Mr. Whitten retired from the ministry they came to Nashua to spend their declining years. The deceased was loved and respected by all who knew her well and her home in earlier years always had a welcome for the social activities of the community. She had been an early member of the Isabella Club and of the Eastern Star, and while her health permitted was active in these organizations. She is survived by two brothers, Albert S. and Will Coler of Waterloo, and a number of nieces and nephews.
