The State Journal-Register, Springfield, Illinois, January 5, 2001: Chapin---Edwin J. Lakamp, 95, of Chapin died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at his home. He was born July 8, 1905, in Scott County, the son of Gust and Anna Tholen Lakamp. He married Rebecca Gillham in 1929 in rural Chapin; she preceded him in death in 1995. He later married Mary E. "Betty" Joy Smith; she preceded him in death. Mr. Lakamp was a farmer in the Scott County area for many years prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Chapin and was a charter member of the Chapin Lions Club. He formerly served on the Chapin Farmers Elevator Board of Directors and Unit 27 board of education. He also assisted in the formation of the Chapin Rural Fire Protection District. Survivors: three daughters, Mary Rae (husband, Max) Brockhouse of rural Chapin, Carol (husband, J. W. "Bill") Smith of Jacksonville, and Emilie (husband, Robert) Fricke of rural Arenzville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a stepson, Daniel H. (wife, Patricia) Smith of Glasford; a stepdaughter, Karen Harnew of Hanover Park; a brother, Herman Lakamp of rural Chapin; a sister, Kathryn Lakamp of rural Chapin; and several nieces and nephews. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Gillham-Buchanan Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Burial: Gillham Cemetery in Scott County.
