Hezekiah was a cooper or barrel maker by trade. He purchase
d land on the Black River from Titus (his brother) in 1786
. This land at that time was in New Hanover County. Due t
o the creation of new counties, it presently likes in Samps
on County.
The Black River at that time was quite navigable and furnis
hed a transportation artery from the outlying area to the p
orts of Wilmington and Brunswick.
Rafted materials would go down the Black River into the Cap
e Fear and then to the ports. Of course, the barrels they m
ade were primarily used in the transportation of naval stor
es goods; turpentine, gum, and pitch. Most of this was use
d in the construction of sea-going vessels.
Taking a cue from "go west young man", Hezekiah moved himse
lf and family (he must have been in his fifties at the time
) from the Black River, New Hanover County, North Carolin
a to the banks of Little Ogeechee Creek in Screven County
, Georgia.
Sometime prior to April April 6, 1798, he sold his North Ca
rolina holdings and it is cited in the deed that he was for
merly of New Hanover County, North Carolina. He is listed i
n the 1790 Census of North Carolina.
Prior to moving to Screven County, Hezekiah took a second w
ife, who was Sarah Newton, the widow of Samuel Newton who h
ad been the first pastor of the Bull Tail Baptist church. T
his church is now known as Wells Chapel Baptist Church an
d still has a thriving congregation in Duplin County, Nort
h Carolina.
