John? Howard
(Bet 1770 and 1780 - Bet 1840 and 1850)
Tentative conclusion as to the father of Mary Polly Howard. As of: 4/2/2018
Polly was married in Cole County to John Robertson who was from Cooper County. A John (50-59) and Ephraim Howard are located in Cole County in the 1830 census and both show daughters 15-19 years of age, which matches Mary Polly's age at that time. Research by Pamela D Niles indicates that Ephraim's children were all born in TN, possibly near Blount County. Also a John Howard appears in the 1820 census on the same page with John Robertson Sr in Monroe County, KY. John is still a likely possibility.
The adjoining Cooper County contains only one male head of household who has a dau 15-19. However, this Joseph Howard had a dau Nancy Melissa (born 1811-1815) who is documented to have married Hezekiah Hogue about 1832 and was a widow by 1837.
Another possibility is William Howard in Cole County also. In 1830 he had two girls 10-14. This William is written up in History of Moniteau County MO Vol II, 2000 (by Ann L Howard), but because he came from TN it does not appear that he is Mary Polly's father. He did have a dau Polly but she married a Holloway or Anderson.
Another possibility: Jesse Howard (1795-1852) married Lucy Mayfield about 1812 in Barren, Kentucky. His children are not all named, especially the children born early on. Since Jesse seems to have lived close to John Robertson (see 1820 census in Monroe, KY) it is probable that John Madison Robertson knew the children of Jesse, possibly a Mary Polly. However: Jesse never went to Missouri and died in KY.
Another possibility: In 1830 Seth Howard (30-39) had two dau 10-14 in Cooper Cty, who could have married at 16. Or possibly her age category was incorrect on census of 1830. This Seth was an Obadiah descendant through Stephen Breed Howard and married Hester Gist, who died in 1830 prior to the census. Seth married a 2nd time late in 1830, and a 3rd time in 1835 to Lydia Bond. Lydia and Seth named one of their children Mary, b abt 1836. It is doubtful that Seth would have named two daughters Mary.
That leaves John as Mary Polly's father.
