The Lancaster Gazette, 15 Jan 1814, SatAt our Sessions, on Tuesday last, John Shepherd, a boatman on the Lancaster Canal, was convicted of stealing hay, from a field in Ellel, in the possession of John Makinson, and sentenced to be imprisoned one month in the House of Correction, at Preston. The exposed situation of property on the line of a canal, renders it peculiarly incumbent on individuals to prosecute offenders of this description. It is the second conviction that has taken place within the last six months ; and we trust will deter other boatmen on the canal from commission of similar offences.
