George Raleigh Parkin (Sir George Parkin's son) wrote: "It was her [Eliza's] third child, Mary Elizabeth (1859-1940), who played an important part in all our family life. Cousin Mary, as we all called her, was a remarkable woman about whom my sister Maude Grant has written (cp. Raleigh Parkin Papers). After whatever early education she had, she attended the Fredericton Normal School in 1878 and then became one of Canada's pioneers of the nursing profession, in which she later had a distinguished career as head nurse in certain large American and Cuban hospitals. Cousin Mary became my godmother and was in and out of our lives all her days -- greatly loved and respected by us all."[from document in Sir George Parkin papers at Library and Archives Canada]
