Reid Merrifield Brooks, Pomology: Davis
1908-1966
Professor
Pomologist in the Agricultural Experiment Station
Reid Merrifield Brooks, the only child of Albert Lincoln and Mertie Reid Brooks, was born in DeKalb, Illinois, February 29, 1908, and succumbed to a coronary attack January 17, 1966. His father was a native of Massachusetts, his mother came from New Brunswick, Canada. In 1927, after completing two years in Northern Illinois State Teachers College, he transferred to the University of Chicago from which he received the B.S. degree with a major in Botany in 1929. Here he was a student of the late Professor E. J. Kraus. From 1929-31 he was employed as a technician in the laboratory of Professor W. P. Tufts, Chairman of the Department of Pomology, College of Agriculture, Davis. His associations with these two men seem to have provided a guiding and motivating influence in his choice of a career. From 1931 to 1934 he was a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Botany, Berkeley. He received the M.S. degree in 1933. He was an instructor in biology at the Taft Union High School and Junior College 1934- 35.
He returned to the University of California, Davis, in 1935 as an Associate in Pomology and Associate in the Experiment Station. He was awarded the Ph.D. in Botany, Berkeley, in 1938. He became an Instructor in Pomology and Junior Pomologist in the Experiment Station in 1939 and by regular steps advanced, with equivalent Experiment Station titles, to the full professorship in 1955.
...
Professor Brooks is survived by his wife, Nevada Barnett Brooks, two children, Donald Reid Brooks of Sacramento, California, Ann (Mrs. Harold Moss) of Davis, California, and five grandchildren.
