Mr. DePuy was the son of Moses and Deborah Loomis DePuy, and was born in Cold Spring, town of Lysander, Oct. 11, 1827, being one of a family of two sons and four daughters, and the last of his father's family. The DePuys were prominent among the early pioneers, and did much to make tillable land where once stood primeval forests. For many years the subject of this sketch as a boy and a young man lived with his father in a log house on what is now the John Carrington Farm, northeast of this village. In those early days trades were not an easy thing to learn and while never possessing a journeyman's knowledge of any special craft, yet Mr. DePuy in the broad school of experience became proficient in many things and there are many evidences of his skill as a laborer. A good citizen, law abiding and faithful in the discharge of every duty, he leaves the record of a well spent life, ever active and useful where health permitted.
About six years ago, Mr. DePuy became badly crippled, through a contraction of the muscles of his lower limbs, since which time he has been unable to get about much, though suffering no pain. Of late a stomach trouble had added to his physical infirmities, though he was able to be about, having been downtown the day before his death. About 2p.m. Saturday he was taken with severe pains in his chest and suffered greatly until the end came.
Mr. DePuy had married April 3, 1853, Miss Mary Loveless, of this town, who, with two children, Miss Hattie DePuy and Fred DePuy, of this village, survives him.
Funeral services were held at his late residence on Gaston Street Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., and burial was made at Riverside cemetery.
From a second obituary notice: An old and well known resident of this place, Loomis DePuy, died at his home Sunday March 2, 1902. Deceased was born in Lysander October 11, 1827, being one of the seven children of Moses and Deborah Loomis Depuy. . . For many years Mr. DePuy had been unable to work, being crippled by rheumatism, but he took an active interest in local affairs and always desired to mingle with his fellow citizens. Knowing this, his many friends often assisted him from home to the business part of the village and these acts of kindness he and his family greatly appreciated.
