email from Peggy Hutchingson 2-29-00: John Terry, father of Thomas Sirls and Amelia, married Rebecca, widow of a Hegeman. "Hegeman" was a prominent name in the 17th century colony of New Netherlands (Now NY(. The family included Dutch Reformed ministers and were important as landowners and civic leaders in that colony. Descendents made homes in northern NJ where there are many Dutch Reformed churches. In any case, that is the only Terry family surname I see that corresponds with early Dutch names.

Part of "Recebba" from the Terry Foundation (paper ripped in half) ......................... In 1794 we find Rebecca's first child, Jane Hegeman, married to a man by the name of John Pharis. He had petitioned the Bucks County Orphan's Court for an inquest of partition for the estate of Henry Hegeman. The Sheriff's jury found that the property consisted of 50 acres with three houses in Northampton Township and it was valued at L300. The widow's dower was set at L a year. The court approved the sale of the property to John and Jane Faris at the appraised value.

In 1791 the Bucks County Court at Doylestown had been asked to appoint a guardian for the three minor children of Henry Hageman, and the guardian chosen was Nathaniel Ellicott. Then, in 1796, an Orphan's Court entry shows that he had died and Samuel Johnson was appointed guardian of the two unmarried children, John and Henry.

Little Rebecca grew up to marry Benjamin Johnson, and Amelia married Joel Blakely. The son Thomas married Mary Ann Murkins and they were the parents of our ancestor, Thomas Sirls Terry. On September 16, 1824 Rebecca became a widow for the second time when John Terry died at Byberry, Phila County, Pa. Rebecca died two years later - Sept. 15, 1826.

Rebecca's life spanned the period from the American Revolution to the Restoration. Her death came six years after Joseph Smith received his First Vision. Her grandson, Thomas Sirls Terry, for whom this family organization is named, was born the year before she died. He was the first of the Terry family to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 17 years later.

Through the trial of history, we see Rebecca as a wife, a mother, a widow, and a grandmother. Now, we want to find her as a child with a surname of her own. Perhaps the work you are doing on your family records is preparing you to help develop the genealogy of this dear grandmother who, as a landlady, waited on the solders during the Revolutionary War.

(From a map on the otherside of the above story. It is ripped in half and the little information on the second half follows. 1. A map of the city, however, shows Byberry and Byberry Road with Bensalem not far away across the county line. 2. It is said that Bucks County today is the backyard of the City of Philadelphia.
