Individual Details
Alney M. WELBORN
(1838 - 1855)
Alney M. Newman, the eighth child and sixth son of Isaac and Rachel Rhoads Newman, was born in 1814. This was the year of the famous Battle of New Orleans, in which Captain Alney McLean Brank was a hero. Thus, it may be assumed that this Newman child was named for the Muhlenberg County hero. There is no record of a marriage for the Alney M. Newman, and he was not listed in his father's household in 1850. A notation by Mrs. Batts stated that "he drowned in the Tombigbee River in Alabama in 1855". This is the only clue to his later years.
