A Short History in the Life Of Casper Gubler
by Casper Gubler (four years prior to his death)
Born in Mullheim, St. Thurgau, Switzerland, August 1, 1835. My parents, Henry and Marguerita Gubler died when I was about 15 years old, when I felt my birth place was no longer a home for me. I traveled 50 miles on foot to Zurich, where I had a brother and sister there. I found work in a silk and wool factory, and I worked there for one year. After than I went to work and learned the joiner and cabinet work, where I worked as an apprentice for three years. In that time I got in with some Mormon Elders and in due time was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saits in the month of Aug. 1854. And soon after received the priesthood. I was ordained a teacher which office I held for many years.
After about three years I took leave and said goodbye to old Switzerland. I emigrated to Utah. A part of the journey only 1300 miles was made with handcarts fro Iowa to Salt Lake. A tedious journey it was. I arrived in September 1857, well worn out from the hardships on the plains. The times we got to Utah was troublesome. The Johnson's Army was stationed there in 1858. Indian trouble in every way, to get work was hard.
In 1861 I was called by Brigham Young with many others to open a mission in Southern Utah, (called now Dixie). There I made my home and stayed there ever sice over 50 years.
I am a pioneer of Utah and Dixie both. I held the offices of the Church all but one, a deacon. I went o a mission in 1888 and 1889 to Europe, Switzerland and Germany. I held several offices: Teacher of Ward for 30 years under Bishop Bunker and marius Ensign; a Sunday School teacher for 15 years; for 12 years President of.....
A History of Casper and Ann Katherine Gubler Gubler
compiled by Mrs. Edmund Gubler
Casper Gubler was born 2 August 1835, in Mullheim, Thurgau, Switzerland. He was a son of Hans Henry Gubler and Anna Margaurette Dinkle. His parents died when he was about 15 years old. He was the 14th child in a family of 15 children.
Casper was converted to the Morman church when he was 18 years old, and came to America in 1857. He worked as a carpenter and cabinet builder in Salt Lake City, Utah for 3 years under the supervision of John D. Lee.
Casper and Ann Katherine were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House in 1861 before they came to Santa Clara to live. They came to Dixie with the Swiss Company in 1861. They were sent down there by President Brigham Young, to build up the country. They both worked hard and were very faithful in their church duties.
They were blessed with four children: Selina, Mary, Jacob, and Kasper. Casper later went on a mission to Switzerland and Ann katherine and the boys took care of the farm and vegetable garden while he was gone.
When Polygay started Casper married Magdalena, who was a daughter of his first wife, Ann Katherina. She bore him one son, Henry. She died when Henry was two weeks old, so Ann katherine took him and raised him along with her children and he was treated as her very own.
Casper's third wife Paulene died when her first child was born and the baby died also. He married Agnes F. Horsley about 1886 and to this union was born three sons and three daughters; Ensign Kasper, Ida Florence, Rosa Ann, Alice Otilla, Samuel Robert, and Emil. He also helped raise Elleanor H., a daughter of Agnes before her marriage to Casper.
Casper died at the age of 82. He was buried in the Santa Clara Cemetary. FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page VALUE accessed 1 Mar 2011), entry for Kasper Gubler, person ID KWCR-GV9. _INFO P FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page
