Dehwondah MARGARET
(1715 - 1777)
[young.FTW]
When Joseph was a babe in arms, his father, Tehowa, was killed in hunting accident on the Ohio River. He was accidentally killed by an arrow through his head, fired in error by a hunting companion. Soon after, in late February, 1741 or 43, his mother, Dehwondah, loaded a large pack for herself, a small pack for 3 year old Mary(Molly) (Degonwadonti), strapped Joseph Thayendanegea To a bundling board, and loaded her few possessions on a travois. It took her eight weeks to make the trip from near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Canajoharie, New York - no small feat for man or woman in the dead of winter. We don't know if she travelled alone, but the trip was made on foot - not on horseback.
Dehwondah expected to live with her father at the "Upper Castle" as Canajoharie was called. It was important Mohawk children had a strong father figure, and Dehwondah was counting on her father to provide that example. However, when she arrived she learned her father was one of at eight who were killed by smallpox earlier that winter.
Enter Nichus Brant, also called Carriahog, or "Newscarrier", an old friend of Dehwandah's father. After the customary mourning period was over, Dehwandah and Nichus were married in an Indian ceremony, and Nichus gave the Brant name to both Mary and Joseph. For some time, Joseph was called Brant's Joseph, but eventually it transposed to Joseph Brant - Thayendaneagea (Strength). FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page

Notes
Marriage
[young.FTW]A minister, Mr. Barclay, was quite agreeable to baptising the babies in his area. On occasion, he performed the ceremonies for the babies and managed to marry the parents at the same time. Among the records it shows that Peter and Margaret were married when their son Jacob was baptised. Of the children Jacob and Christina nothing further has been learned...they probably died in childhood.
