Will of Mary Geary in 1783
The last will and testament of me Mary Geary of Poyters End in the parish of Hitchin, in the county of Hertford, Widow, as follows (that is to say); Where as all my customary or copyhold land held of the Manor of Minsden otheriwse Mindonbury with Sangley are surrendered to the use of my will. Now I do hereby charge all that my customary mesuage of tenement with the appurtenances situate at Poyters End aforesaid and also all thos my six acres (more or less) of arable land, meadow and pasture with the appurtenances at Poyters End aforesaid to the said mesuage or tenement belonging and all other my customary mesuage held of the said Manor with the payment as well of all my just debts and Funeral expences as also of th Legacies hereinafter by me bequeathed (that is to say):
I give and bequeathe to my daughter Ann, the wife of Isaac Morgan, to my daughter Mary the wife of William Ramsey, to my daughter Alice the wife of Thomas Constable, to my daughter Hannah the wife of John Clark and to my daughter Susannah the wife of John Wheeler the several sums of Six Pouns a piece all of lawful money of Great Britain to be respectively paid to them within twelve months next after my decease and my will and mind is that if either or any of my said daughters, Ann Morgan, Mary Ramsey, Alice Constable or Hannah Clark shall happen to die before their said Legacies shall befome payable, then I give and bequeathe the legacy of her or them so dying unto her or their respective child or children equally to be divided between and amongst such child or children if more than one, of her or them so dying share and share alike and to be paid to such child or children at his, her or their age or ages of twenty one years.
I also charge my said copyhold estate with the further sum of three pounds of like lawful money which I give and bequeath to Saah Geary the natural daughter of my said daughter Susannah Wheeler to be paid to the said Sarah Geary when she attains her age of twenty one years and in case the said Sarah shall happen to die before her said legacy shall become payable, then I give and bequeath her said legacy of three pounds unto her said mother Susanna Wheeler twelve months next after the decease of the said Sarah Geary and in case my said daughter give the same legacy to the said Saah Geary her natural daughter.
And my will further is that in case my said daughter Susannah Wheeler and the said Sarah Geary shall happen to die before their said legacy shall become payable then I give the same to all the lawful children of the said Susanna Wheeler equally, but if she should leave no children then I direct that the said legacy shall remain with and to my son Abraham Geary and so charge my will and desire is that the said mesuage lands and premises and also my two acres of customary land held of the Manor of Hnebworth and all my other eal estate what so ever and where so ever shall descend to my son Abraham Geary and his Heirs as my heir at law. Also I give and bequeath all my household goods, Linnen, pewter, bras, beds, bedding, and implements of household whatsoever unto and equally between and amongst my said six children Ann Morgan, Mary Ramsey, Susanna Wheeler, Alice Constable, Hannah Clark and Abraham Geary, share and share alike to be parted and shared amongst them winin one month next after my decease.
Also I give all my wearing appearl and rings equally between my said daughters to be devided amonst them within one month after my decease. And all the res and residue of my money, debts to me owing, stock in farming and other my personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever that I shall die possessed of or intitled unto and not hereinbefore otherwise desposed of I give and bequeath to my said son Abraham Geary. He paying all my just debts and above mentioned legacies and my funeral and incident expenses and charges and I do hereby make, ordain, constitue and appoint my said son Abraham Geary sole executor of this my last will and testment hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof I the said Mary Gery have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the second day of Septeber in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty three.
