(23 Apr 1749 - 3 Jan 1831)
One morning in the summer of 1777 General Washington and an aide drew rein before the Old Vail Farm, where was gathered quite a group of young men. The General inquired if any of them knew of a place in the nearby hills where he could observe the movements of the British troops without being seen. Edward Fitz Randolph stepped forward, and saluting, assured him he knew every nook and hiding place in the country, and would conduct him to where the entire valley could be seen below. This rocky elevation was later named Washington Rock, and is not far from Plainfield, if not now a part of it. Historians state that this was the turning point of the war.
