Hattie March SPILLMAN

(1 Mar 1889 - 7 Oct 1962)

NOTES TAKEN JULY 29, 1991 FROM HENRY CLAY CLARK AND MARIE CLARK MOORE

In 1922 the L. N. Clarks left Kaufman County and moved to Johnson County, Texas. They lived on a farm owned by Carl Center; Ross Center lives there at the present time (July, 1991). They lived there for some time and then they moved to the Pashawn (phonetic spelling) place west of Crowley; it was close to Bob Hill. From there they moved south of Burleson to the Chisenhall (phonetic spelling) place and lived there for a year. The Chisenhall place was owned by the Taylor family who also owned the Big Four Grocery Store in Burleson. Then they moved to Caddo and stayed there from 1929 to 1930. Then they moved to the Ross Shannon place; from there to the Moran place; from there to the Arch Dunn place; from there to the George Bransom place; from there to the Noble Clark place; from there to the Chandler place; and from there to the Sharp Place. The Sharp place was "fondly" known as "The Old Hot House." It was freezing cold in the winter and sizzling hot in the summer. They lived at the "Hot House" when I (Sharon Clark) was born in 1943. In 1945, after the death of their son, Russell Clark, they moved into Burleson and purchased their home at 200 South Dobson and lived there until they passed away in 1953 and 1962. Both passed away at the Cleburne hospital in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas.

Marie and Lennie Clark were born in Johnson County when the Clarks lived at Carl Center's place. It was located on Farm Road 731. As you go down 731 towards Crowley from Burleson, go across the railroad track and turn left; this would be where they lived.

SPILLMAN NOTES

Uncle Henry remembers his Grandpa Spillman, Humphrey Bate Spillman. He said Humphrey died of blood poisoning he received while picking corn. While he and Uncle Milton were picking corn, their hands were scratched and injured, and blood poisoning set in. The doctor treating them diagnosed this as "tobacco heart". Lon Clark didn't agree with this diagnosis and begged them to call in another doctor. They finally did so and the new doctor recognized what the problem was. He operated on Uncle Milton on the kitchen table. During the surgery, Milton swallowed his tongue and the doctor pulled it back out with a pair of pliers. Milton survived but it was too late for Humphrey and he passed away.

Henry said the Spillmans lived close to Mesquite at that time. After Humphrey died, Grandma Spillman (Lou Ann) and the family moved up on a hill sort of across from the Lon Eudy place in Heath. Henry said the Clarks lived southeast of where the Spillmans lived.

Henry said Grandpa Spillman was quite a guy. H. B. would have Russell and Henry wrestle every time they visited him (which wasn't very often because they didn't live very close together). H. B. would always cheer for the underdog to win. He also remembered one time while riding in a wagon with H. B. Apparently the kids were playing around and were in danger of falling off the wagon. Someone told them to settle down or they would fall out of the wagon. H. B. said, "That's all right, the ground will catch him."

Henry remembers the family having reunions regularly. He thinks the people were Spillmans rather than Butlers. He didn't remember any Butlers. FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page FIELD NAME Page
