Notes
Birth
Letter from Mr McCall:"In the early 1800's there lived in Fox Hollow, on one of the upper branches of the Hawksbill Creek, just beyond the old community of Marksville, against the Blue Ridge Mountains, some few miles beyond the little town of Stanley, in what is now Page county (then Shenandoah county) Virginia, a man by the name of Benjamin CAVE. He was born around the period of 1775-1780.
1787 sea He was probably born "beyond the ridge", that is to say, in the area of Culpeper or Madison county today. My guess is that his father was John CAVE."
Marriage
I would like to quote some of the 1951 work of Colonel Charlie McCall, (decd.) of Fairfax, VA who was married to one of the granddaughters of Benjamin CAVE and Nancy Gallihue. As you will see some of the information has been proven since his research was made and I will note corrections as follows: sea"Now Benjamin of Hawksbill, had eleven children ( I think) by Nancy. All of these children were born at the old place on the Hawksbill and probably during the period of 1800 - 1824. These children were (not in order of age or birth years) 1. Harriet, 2. Catherine, 3. Paschal Wellington, 4. John Anderson, 5. Benjamin F[ranklin], 6. Joseph H., 7. William Arrell, 8 George B., 9. Edmund or Edmond. 10. Eliza or Elizabeth and 11. Sarah Ann. It is said that Catherine was the twin sister of Paschal and died in infancy." we have disproved the child Eliza or Elizabeth. She belongs to the brother Reuben CAVE. We have copy of the marriage consent signed by her father. There could be some confusion as John CAVE signed as a bondsman sea
Miscellaneous
"About 1832-1835, Benjamin of Hawksbill, with his wife and all of their living children except one, namely Reverend John Anderson CAVE, removed from the Hawksbill directly to Champaign county, OHIO. They settled around Urbana and St. Paris area in that county. About 1840 two of the sons of Benjamin of Hawksbill, returned permanently from Champaign county Ohio to Page county VA. These two sons were William Arrell CAVE and Paschal Wellington CAVE. They joined their brother, Reverend John Anderson CAVE who had remained in Page county, VA." John Anderson Cave had a son born shortly in 1842 after his brothers went "home". He was named Return Cave, was this in honour of his brothers return or had he been in OH. seaEndnotes
