Molly P. Goheen of Corvallis died Monday of heart failure. Shewas 88.
She was born in Seattle, the youngest of five daughters ofMorris and Jenny Pearl. Her family moved to Port Angeles, Wash., in1918, where her father owned a hotel. The family returned toSeattle several years later and she graduated from high schoolthere in 1930 at the age of 16. She graduated with distinction in1934 from Western Washington College, in Bellingham, now WesternWashington University.
She met her future husband, Harry Goheen, at college, and theywere married in 1940. She taught first grade at a small primaryschool in Issaquah, Wash. After the end of World War II and herhusband's naval service, they lived in a number of academiccommunities throughout the United States before moving to Corvallisin 1955. While her husband helped create the department of computerscience at Oregon State University, she became the children'slibrarian at the Corvallis Public Library in 1956. In 1958, she washired as associate research librarian in science and technology atthe OSU library. She retired in 1981.
She was a member of the American Civil Liberties Union and alifetime member of the NAACP and the Friends of the Library. Sheread to and tutored children with reading problems in the Corvallispublic schools and cooked for Stone Soup. She worked with foreignstudents to help with learning English, and many of them becamelifelong friends. She sang in local madrigal groups and in the BeitAm choir. She was a charter-founding member of Hadassah and of BeitAm. She enjoyed traveling with her husband throughout the UnitedStates, Europe and Japan.
Survivors include her sister, Carolyn Lauman of Seattle; sons,David of Sea Ranch, Calif., and Mark of Los Altos, Calif.;daughter, Mitzi Goheen of Amherst, Mass.; four grandchildren andfour great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She waspreceded in death by her husband in 1988.
A service will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, in theChildren's Farm Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donationscan be made to the Harry Goheen Memorial Scholarship Fund atOSU.
