***THE FIRST BRICK WALL***
These siblings are found in Fairfield County at the time of the Revolution, with circumstantial evidence indicating they had been there for perhaps as long as a generation:
FORD,William Gardner (my direct ancestor), married Magdalen Love in 1779(note: only a few records list him by his full name; most refer tohim only as Gardner Ford)
FORD,Nathaniel, married Seniah Cloud
FORD,Hezekiah (some dispute on his marriage partner)
FORD,El.izabeth (m. Burrell Birge, a Loyalist. They removed to North Carolina for the duration of the Revolution, then returned)
FORD,Martha Keziah, married Nicholas Peay
My concern is where the five Ford siblings came from. My great-uncle,James Love Ford, was told by his father, Daniel Faust Ford, that the family migrated from England, leaving the port of Liverpool and arriving in Charleston, South Carolina. Unfortunately, he didn't say what generation came to America--was it the siblings listed above or their parents? The family was well established in Fairfield County during the Revolution, with the men serving in the South Carolina militia.
***THE SECOND BRICK WALL***
One of William Gardner Ford's sons, Dorrel Ford (b. 1 February 1793; died 4 February 1861) married first Susannah ______ (b. 19 July 1789; died27 September 1834 in Greene County, Alabama). It seems logical thatshe was a native of Fairfield County or a nearby one, possibly Sumter County. They gave their first son the name John Faust Ford, which led me to trace some of the Fausts who lived in Columbia and northwards toward Fairfield County, but so far I've found no connection. If anyone has a Susannah with the birthdate shown--or a Susanna of the right age without a birthdate, please contact me. All suggestions welcome.
WILL DO LOOKUPS
I have a fairly complete listing of Nathaniel Ford's descendants, courtesy of "The Fords of Fairfield County, Vol. 1," a book by my cousin Sidney Ford Tatom. I will gladly do lookups in this book for those of you who do not have access to it.
I also have a book "History of Fairfield County South Carolina, published in 1943, by Fitz Hugh McMaster, which includes a local census taken in 1829 for tax purposes. It lists only heads of household and the number of dependents. The history contained in the book is fascinating and it mentions many early settlers. However, the book is *not* indexed, so please don't ask me to look for the story of a specific ancestor. There are also lists of Fairfield soldiers in the War of 1812, the Seminole War, the Confederate War (McMaster's term for the War), and World War I. I'll happily look up those for you. They list the company the man served in and the officers of that company.
