Nicholas Mester

SOUTH BEND - Nicholas Mester, 89, passed away at 10:58 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Nicholas was born on November 12, 1918, in South Bend, to the late John and Sarolta Mester. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Sarah and Irene; and by brothers, Joseph and Patrick. On February 7, 1948, Nicholas married Theresa (Goheen). She survives along with their children, Noreen (George) Rupchock of Bremen, Gary (Helen) Mester of South Bend, Rebecca (Mark) Saberniak of South Bend and Donald Mester of South Bend; grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Angela, Michael, Geoffrey, Clare, Samantha and Theresa; great-grandson, Gaius; a sister, Mary Anderson of South Bend; and a brother, John (Martha) Mester of South Bend. Nicholas was a parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. His life work was as a banker. He was treasurer for Holy Cross Bingo, and was an usher at Notre Dame for over 40 years including being a captain usher for the press box for Notre Dame football. Nicholas was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Santa Maria Council, the VFW, and the Ancient Order of the Deep. He was an avid camper and belonged to the Travel Trailer Club of the Midwest. He honorably served in the U.S. Army and the Army Air Corps during World War II. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today (March 17) in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans Park. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
