J. S. Ballard died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Addie B. Stemmons, 57 Seventh street, Oak Cliff, yesterday evening. The funeral will be from the residence to Greenwood Cemetery at 4:30 this afternoon.
Mr Ballard was born in Charleston, Va., Dec 20, 1823, and was 86 years of age. He was married in 1850 to Miss Sarah Elizabeth Goble. In 1857 the family came to Texas and settled at Lancaster, Dallas County. In 1861 they came to Dallas, where Mr Ballard engaged in the milling business. Two years later he built the Terry Mills, now known as the City Mills. Afterward he became a contractor and built the first three-story brick structure that was erected in the city.
Mr Ballard served as Alderman several times. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, having passed all the chairs in both the subordinate lodge and the encampment. He is survived by his widow and his daughter, Mrs Stemmons, His son, John M Ballard, died in 1891, and his son George S Ballard, in 1903.
